This project is another great example of effective collaboration between British Land, Portland Design and Merson. With the launch of a new building on Kingdom Street and landscaping completed by Maylim, a new system was required to ensure pedestrians could navigate their way around the area easily.
We created a unique range of wayfinding signage throughout the Paddington Central Public Realm area during a key time for the development owned by British Land.
The brief was to augment the identity of the public space by providing a selection of totems and monolith signs which would direct people seamlessly between locations. Working in partnership with client designers at Portland and British Land themselves, the design progressed through concept, prototyping and sampling phase, where we converted design concepts into bespoke physical products using a unique product mix of materials in keeping with the central London space.
The former railway goods yard has been transformed into a modern complex with wellbeing, leisure, retail and leisure facilities. The installation of our products was part of an overall enhancement programme which included re-paving, the introduction of a new woodland garden, a games room and spacious seating areas which would brand stamp the whole area.
The clever use of real natural oak wood, greenery, and industrial materials provided a brand-new look and feel. With their unique character and in the Central London location, these timber-clad signs have proved to be an instant hit with the local community. The adoption of a strong identity and clear mapping throughout the area gives an excellent visual performance and really carries off the design intent as well as providing functional and fit for purpose products that are durable and suitable for use in an outdoor setting.
As all the totems had been crafted from real solid wood, this added significant weight to the products. We, therefore, contracted the use of spider cranes to lift and help with the installation on site. This was done within a safe environment with minimal disruption to businesses nearby.
