As part of the refurbishment to the Terminal 2 International Departure Lounge at Heathrow Airport, Merson were commissioned to design, manufacture and install a large, bespoke monolith sign that would act as a strategic focal point of the new wayfinding strategy, optimising passenger flow through the lounge. The monolith was to incorporate FID screens showing flight information and maps, there is also a leaflet holder and integrated CCTV.
The design intent was provided by Pascal+Watson and Merson’s team of Construction Designers worked to make this into a reality. The monolith is fabricated from a mild steel frame with a stainless steel back panel. There are LED illuminated trims and a laminated glass front. A hydraulic access system ensures that whilst the monolith is tamper-proof and safe, maintenance is straightforward. This is vital when a sign contains screens and other digital elements.
Owing to the size of the monolith and required electrical connections, logistics and groundworks, installation was a challenge. Careful coordination between trades during three consecutive night shifts ensured that it was a success.
